Cellular biology and immunopathology of respiratory disease, especially asthma, using cell culture studies and a variety of realistic experimental models in mice. Areas of interest include mechanisms of regulation of the inflammatory response in asthma; the role of cytokines/growth factors in the development of inflammation, remodelling and airway hyper-reactivity in chronic asthma and acute exacerbations; and the influence of early-life infections and environmental injury in the pathogenesis of childhood asthma. Ongoing productive collaborations with colleagues at the University of Newcastle and the University of Technology, Sydney.
Particular interest in valid and effective methods of assessment; in applications of technology-enhanced learning, especially virtual microscopy; and in cross-disciplinary integration in teaching and assessment. Recipient of a Vice-Chancellor's Award for Teaching Excellence, a Carrick Citation for an Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning, and a Vice-Chancellor's Award for Initiatives that Enhance Learning. Responsible for development of a graduate entry stream into the UNSW Medicine program and of pathways from the Medicine program to specialist training.
