A window into the Brain: Plasticity of Neural Circuits after Injury – a key role for glia.

Neuroscience, Mental Health & Addiction Special Seminar

Speaker: Prof Junichi Nabekura, National Institutes for Physiological Sciences, Okazaki, Japan

Junichi Nabekura is Director of the National Institutes for Physiological Sciences (NIPS), one of the premier research institutes in Japan and Internationally, focussing on high quality and cutting edge basic Physiological and Neuroscience research. Professor Nabekura’s own research interests are around the plasticity of neural circuits in response to changes in the environment – during development, learning and following recovery from injury. His laboratory uses high resolution two photon in vivo imaging to observe how the fine structures and neuronal activity of cortical circuits changes in rodent models of ischemia, chronic pain and depression. Professor Nabekura’s lab is particularly interested in how glial cells contribute to this neural circuit plasticity.

Professor Nabekura is visitng UNSW Sydney to enable the continuation of a research exchange
agreement between UNSW Medicine and the National Institutes for Physiological Sciences. His
seminar will also introduce the Institute, and invite collaborations with UNSW Medicine researchers.
His visit is kindly supported by UNSW Medicine Neuroscience, Mental Health and Addiction Theme..
