Neuroscience & Non-Communicable Diseases WEBINAR Series

Speaker: Professor Zhengli Shi, Director of the Center for Emerging Infectious Diseases, Wuhan Institute of Virology

Professor Zhengli Shi is the Director of the Center for Emerging Infectious Diseases at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, where her lab has made seminal contributions to the biology and evolution of SARS-like coronaviruses. This included the discovery of the zoonotic reservoir of SARS in the early 2000s, and in January of this year, the first description of the SARS-like coronavirus that underlies the COVID-19 pandemic. Between these seminal discoveries, she conducted extensive work to characterise other coronavirus species circulating in wild bat populations, including the description of other SARS-like coronaviruses that had the potential for zoonotic transfer to humans, and the molecular characterisation of their surface binding domains.

Professor Shi obtained her undergraduate degree from Wuhan University, her masters from the Wuhan Institute of Virology and her PhD from Montpellier University, France, and has collaborated and spent time in Australia at the CSIRO Australian Animal Health Laboratory (now the Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness) in Geelong, Victoria
