Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEPs) are 4-year university qualified allied health professionals who specialise in the delivery of exercise, lifestyle and behavioural modification programs for the prevention and management of chronic diseases and injuries. AEPs provide physical activity and behaviour change support for clients with conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, depression, cancer, arthritis, COPD and many more.
 
Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA) provides the national accreditation program for exercise physiologists. AEPs are recognised as allied health professionals and are eligible to register with Medicare Australia, the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, State Insurance Regulatory Authority (SIRA), SafeWork NSW, Care NSW (iCare) and have recognition among many private health insurers.
 
The Bachelor of Exercise Physiology is run over four years of full-time study.
 
Program Stages
 
Stage 1
Foundation science courses and introduction to the profession.
 
Introductory Exercise Science; Chemistry; Molecules, Cells and Genes; Anatomy; Psychology; Statistics; Exercise Programs and Behaviour.
 
Stage 2
Comprehensive foundation in biomedical sciences plus exercise science courses.
 
Biochemistry; Human Physiology; Exercise Physiology; Functional Anatomy; Biomechanics; Movement Assessment and Instruction; Processes in Disease. 
 
Stage 3
Greater depth in medical science courses and profession specific courses.
 
Physical Activity and Health; Clinical Exercise Physiology; Pharmacology in Exercise; Muscle and Motor Control; Movement Rehabilitation; Neuromuscular Rehabilitation; Electives; General Education.
 
Stage 4
Courses emphasise the consolidation of clinical skills and knowledge, and skills for independent learning.
 
Major Clinical Practicum; Research Seminars; Research Project; Health Promotion; Electives; General Education.
 
Year 3 & 4 Electives include: Advanced Exercise Physiology; Physical Activity in Special Populations; Cancer Sciences for Exercise Physiology; Nutrition; Advanced Nutrition; Human Biochemistry; Musculoskeletal Diseases; Cardiovascular Physiology; Endocrine Physiology; Healthy Planning; Health Psychology.
Clinical Training commences from year 1 and is primarily supported by the University’s own Lifestyle Clinic. Placements in year 4 are completed within the University’s Lifestyle Clinic and Clinical Schools in hospitals, as well as other hospitals and private practices.
