Title: Activated Valve Interstitial Cells Repair Diseased Heart Valves
Valve interstitial cells (VICs) undergo activation and phenotypic changes in response to
valve injury and disease. We show that mechanical wounding of in vitro monolyers
activates VICs and up-regulates TGF-b. Exogenous TGF-b regulates VIC activation and
modulates VIC proliferation, apoptosis and wound closure. In conclusion, TGF-b is an
important cytokine in regulation VIC wound repair.
