Research
The School of Medical Sciences has major research strengths in the areas of Inflammatory Diseases, Neuroscience and Vascular Disease. Studies in the
Inflammatory Diseases Research Unit aim to define the pathophysiology of inflammation in human diseases such as arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, asthma and uveitis. Researchers in the
Neuroscience Group study normal neural function and its modification in injury and disease including blindness, paraplegia, pain and stress. The
Centre for Vascular Research is a cooperative of vascular biology laboratories in the ANU, Monash University and UNSW. Vascular biology and pathology, in particular atherosclerosis and angiogenesis, are studied using molecular and cell biology, protein and lipid chemistry.
Other research areas include Biological Anthropology, Molecular and Cellular Oncology, and Health and Sports Science. Facilities include state-of-the-art cellular and molecular biology labs, histology and imaging equipment and animal and clinical surgeries allowing parallel studies on animal models and human tissues.
The School contributes significantly to the University’s leading position in winning government and industry grants. Our teaching and research staff are experts in their field and have laid the foundations for our strong international reputation in research.
