Physiology

What is Physiology?

Physiology is the study of how the normal body systems function in humans and animals, such as the respiratory system, cardiovascular system, reproduction, endocrinology and the central nervous system. It is one of the fundamental pillars of medicine and underpins many areas of biomedical study and research. Physiology is an integrating science, providing a context in which the role of genetics, biochemistry and the environment can be investigated. It extends from the molecular details of membrane and cellular function, through to the function of the different organs and the interaction of these organs within the whole body. Investigating the normal function of cells, tissues and organs provides the basis for understanding the dysfunction seen in animal and human disease. It also provides the means for identifying targets for subsequently developing new methods of treating such diseases. The breadth of physiological science is reflected in the research activities undertaken at the School of Medical Sciences in the discipline of physiology.

Careers in Physiology

Graduates with training in physiology have the opportunity to pursue a variety of careers. Many will elect for additional post-graduate study and a career as a research physiologist or apply for post-graduate medicine courses. Others will apply their knowledge as a biomedical technician or hospital scientist within cardiac, renal or respiratory facilities. There are opportunities within the pharmaceutical industry, either in regulatory control with the Therapeutic Goods Administration, regulatory compliance in a pharmaceutical company, or as part of a team testing new drugs. A variety of biomedical supply companies employ graduates to provide the necessary technical knowledge required as sales and support staff. With additional study, physiology may be a stepping-stone to careers in medical / scientific communications, teaching, patent law and management of biomedical businesses.
