New Heart Foundation Awards
The National Heart Foundation has announced six research awards will go to UNSW academics in 2006.
Dr Shane Thomas, of the Centre for Vascular Research (CVR), was given special mention for receiving top rankings in the Grants in Aid category of the awards. He will receive $120,000 for his work on Myeloperoxidase and endothelial dysfunction.
Other successful Grants in Aid projects are:
Dr Pascal Carrive, in the Department of Anatomy: Role of medullary raphe nuclei in the cardiovascular response to psychological stress
Professor Levon Khachigian, from the CVR: Yin yang-1 for the inhibition of graft failure
Dr Vaughan Macefield, a conjoint academic based at the Prince of Wales Medical Research Institute: Nitric oxide and sympathetic reflex control of blood pressure in health and hypertension
Associate Professor Wendy Jessup, from the CVR: Role of ABCG1 in cellular cholestrol export
Dr Guishi Zhang, who is also based at the CVR, has received a Biomedical Postdoctoral Research Fellowship for c-Jun targeting strategies as novel inhibitors of vascular inflammation. He will receive $120,320 over two years.
The total funding for those six research grants is over $720, 000.
