Brain Sciences UNSW launch

An innovative cross-disciplinary research network, Brain Sciences UNSW, has been launched by the Vice-Chancellor Professor Mark Wainwright as part of Brain Awareness Week.

The aim of the network is to facilitate cross-disciplinary research between basic neuroscientists and clinical researchers, to further understanding of both normal and abnormal brain functioning.

Brain Sciences UNSW involves researchers from the Faculties of Medicine and Science, the Prince of Wales Medical Research Institute, the Black Dog Institute and the Garvan Institute of Medical Research (neurobiology program). Professor Phil Waite from the School of Medical Sciences made a presentation at the launch about spinal cord injury and repair.

"The 'Brain Sciences' - neuroscience, psychiatry, psychology and neurology - are major existing strengths of UNSW and affiliated institutes," said Professor Wainwright. "We expect that this across-faculty and across-institution network will enhance synergies between like-minded researchers."

In the coming months, Brain Sciences UNSW will commence a series of regular campus-wide colloquia, to promote dialogue between researchers across a wide range of disciplines.
