International Science Prize goes to UNSW



The President of Iran has awarded an international science prize to UNSW Professor Levon Khachigian, from the Centre for Vascular Research.


Levon Khachigian receives Khwarizmi AwardProfessor Khachigian won first prize in the 18th Khwarizmi International Award for Science and Technology, for his work on gene targeting.

"I am very honoured to have been selected as the winner and to meet the Iranian President, His Excellency Sayed Mohammad Khatami," said Professor Khachigian. "It has also been a terrific opportunity to see what sort of work is going on in the scientific community in Iran."

The award recognises distinguished innovators and inventors in fundamental and industrial science. It is co-sponsored by UNESCO, the World Intellectual Property Organization, the International Federation of Inventors' Association and the Iranian Research Organization for Science and Technology.

Professor Khachigian was presented with a Certificate of Excellence in Research, a Commemorative medal and a Gold Trophy at a ceremony in Tehran this month.

Professor Khachigian also addressed audiences at Tehran University and at the National Institute for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology.

The Khwarizmi International Award was created in honour of the 9th Century A.D. mathematician and astronomer Abu Jafar Mohammad Ibn Mousa Khwarizmi.
