Success for SOMS in UNSW Faculty Research Grants Program

School of Medical Sciences staff have been awarded 16 UNSW Faculty Research grants for 2005.

9 of the 16 grant recipients were also successful in their applications for a UNSW Early Career Researcher Award for 2004.

The School was very well represented by its staff in this round of internal funding, winning 25 out of 58 awards made in both categories throughout the Faculty of Medicine.

The UNSW Faculty Research Grants Program (FRGP) is designed to support cross disciplinary research and emerging research strengths. The Early Career Researcher Awards (ECR) are part of the Program and are available to staff who have recently begun a career in research.

The successful projects are:

Dr David Bentley: The effects of high intensity endurance training on myogenic regulatory factors in human skeletal muscle

Dr Pascal Carrive: What role do the caudal raphe nuclei play in the autonomic response to psychological stress?

Dr Bret Church: Structure-based drug design in the high-throughput era

Dr Katherina Gaus: Membrane structure at T-cell activation sites and immunological synapses

Mr Charles Harvey: HIV induced alterations in lymphocyte trafficking to the liver of HCV co-infected individuals

Dr Stewart Head: Distribution of AChRs in skeletal muscle fibres from dystrophin mice

Mr Ken Hsu: Isolation of DNA-binding protein(s) that bind the essential promoter region of the murine S100A8 gene using DNA affinity chromatography and peptide sequencing

Dr John Hunt: The role of the novel mast cell protease, delta tryptase, in inflammatory disorders

Dr Jason Ivanusic: Sensory innervation of bone and associated tissue

Dr Mathew Kircaldie: Artificial sensation in the rat barrel cortex
