Three of the best at Brain Sciences event

SOMS students made a clean sweep of the student poster awards at the inaugural Brain Sciences symposium.

Angela Laird won Best Student Poster for her presentation entitled: The effect of treadmill training on cardiovascular dysfunction in spinal cord injured rats (Laird, Carrive and Waite) at the Brain Sciences UNSW one-day “What’s Hot” symposium. Postgraduate students Teri Furlong and Edwin Lim achieved the highly commended award for their presentations.

The postdoctoral poster prize was awarded to Sarah McKay from the Garvan Institute for her presentation entitled: The role of spontaneous and sound-driven activity at a giant auditory synapse (McKay and Oleskevich).

Brain Sciences UNSW is a cross-disciplinary conglomerate of researchers from the Faculties of Medicine, Science and Engineering and from affiliated hospitals and UNSW institutes. The symposium highlighted a broad array of the latest Neuroscience research being conducted by staff and students within the group. The event was a great success, with over 100 registrants attending. Presentations were discussed in a series of 5 short symposia sessions, in addition to the postgraduate student and postdoctoral poster sessions.

The SOMS Neuroscience group was well represented, with presentations by Dr Pascal Carrive (Beyond the Brain: Spinal Cord and Periphery), Dr Gilles Guillemin (Aging and Degeneration) and Professor Margaret Morris (The Brain, Appetite and Obesity). SoMS postdocs, Dr Gila Moalem-Taylor, Dr David K. Chelvanayagam and Dr Wei Qu and research students Michael Lee and Kaka Ting also presented posters of their work.
