SoMS Academic Excellence (Top-Up) Scholarships

Up to four Top-Up scholarships awards of $5,000 per annum.
Awards paid for the duration of the PhD program (maximum of 3 years).
Awards are merit-based.

Eligibility

Students will be eligible for consideration for a Top-Up scholarship in 2012 or any given calendar year if:
  • They have applied for a competitively awarded scholarship that commences in the same calendar year- e.g. the Australian Postgraduate Award (APA)/ University Postgraduate Award (UPA) for domestic applicants or the International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS)/ University International Postgraduate Award (UIPA) for international applicants - to support their higher degree studies.
  • They will commence a full-time PhD degree within the School of Medical Sciences in the same calendar year. *
  • Their primary supervisor is an academic (non-conjoint) within the School of Medical Sciences.
* Note: Top-Up scholarships will not be awarded to students who have already commenced a PhD within the School prior to 2012.

Process

  • All students who fulfil the eligibility requirements (as specified above) will be considered for the scholarship. No application is necessary.
  • For students commencing in Semester 1, up to three scholarships may be awarded to the highest ranking candidates. The number of scholarships offered will be no more than three for that semester although the School will have the discretion to offer less than three.
  • For students commencing in Semester 2, up to one scholarship may be awarded to the highest ranking candidates. The number of scholarships offered will be no more than one for that semester although the School will have the discretion to offer none.
  • Successful candidates will be notified by the School.
  • Successful candidates must accept their APA/UPA or IPRS/UIPA offer and enrol in the SoMS PhD degree program according to the University’s enrolment guidelines.
  • Successful candidates cannot defer the scholarship and the Top-Up scholarship will be withdrawn. Students who have gained an APA and then commence their PhD degree in a subsequent semester or year will be eligible for consideration in that following semester or year. In this case, they will be assessed using their original APA ranking. Students must notify the School if this applies to them.
