Honours in the School of Medical Sciences
The School of Medical Sciences offers Honours courses in the Anatomy, Pathology, Pharmacology and Physiology disciplines. The courses commence in session 1 and for entry into each course a Science student (this includes students in all Faculty of Science programs: i.e. Science - 3970, Advance Science - 3972, Medical Science - 3991, etc.) must have completed at least 24 units at Level 3 in the relevant Major sequence outlined for the discipline (as a guide please see the UNSW Online Handbook for the 3970 program's course requirements for Majors in Anatomy, Pharmacology and Physiology and a Minor in Pathology). Exceptions to these requirements will only be permitted with the consent of the honours course coordinator.
Other requirements of all Science students prior to entry into honours are as follows:
- A credit average (≥65% weight average mark; WAM) for all pre-honours courses.
- A credit average for all Level 3 courses relevant to the Major sequence.
- An applicant with an overall WAM of between 60 to 64 will only be considered if the weighted average for all of their Level 3 subjects is ≥65% (not just those relevant to their major sequence).
- Completion of all general studies courses (12 units in total with no more than 3 units being undertaken in the Science faculty and a maximum of 6 units within any other faculty).
There are
no exceptions to the above requirements.
Also note that the award of Honours is also available in the
Bachelor of Science (Health and Excercise Science) degree for high achieving students.
Objectives, Enrolment, Current Timetable, Structure and Assessment
The main aim of the course is to introduce undergraduate students to medical research. Students gain laboratory experience by undertaking a research project. Research projects are proposed and supervised by either a School staff member or a researcher affiliated with the School. Students also gain experience in scientific writing and oral presentation via the submission of a two written assessments, and two student seminars and a student interview, respectively. The course is also comprised of compulsory attendance at research techniques seminars (in session 1) and school research seminars (all year round).
